Start and end your day with a peaceful mind
Hi it's Misaki from Shi-Zen.
In today’s fast-paced world, I sometimes feel anxious the minute I wake up—before I’ve even washed my face!
Ideally, we’d feel calm and happy all day, right? But… how?
When I actually meditate, even for just five minutes, I feel centered.
But here’s the catch: when I forget (for days… or weeks… okay, months), my emotions become a rollercoaster—happy one minute, irritated the next, exhausted by lunch.
I want to make meditation a habit, but I’m just not a 'habit' person!
Then I found something that helps me remember— a small, elegant Japanese singing bowl, 'Orin' called Sotto Ring.
I keep it on my desk, and whenever I start feeling those not-so-happy emotions, I ring it.
The sound snaps me back to calm.
It’s like my little 'reset button' for the day!

What is an 'orin'?
The orin is a traditional Japanese singing bowl, used in Zen practice to signal the start and end of meditation, helping to bring focus and closure to the experience.
Orin bowls are crafted from materials such as brass, Siljin bronze (a unique bronze alloy), cupronickel, and even gold.
About our favorite orin, the Sotto Ring
Our favorite Orin, the Sotto Ring, is made in Toyama, Japan, using brass and sakura(cherry) wood.
Its sound is beautifully clear and peaceful, creating an atmosphere of calm and serenity.
Benefits of using an orin
Here are the benefits of using the orin, especially during meditation:
- Its clear and sharp tone helps calm the mind and relax the body.
- The sound dispels distractions, allowing you to focus fully on your meditation.

The secret to the orin's exceptional tone

A little bit about me
"My name is Misaki, and I’m the proud mother of two mischievous daughters who think everything is edible, so I’m constantly saying, 'That’s not food, that’s trash!'
Four years ago, when I was living in Tokyo, I’d come home from work after 10 PM, feeling like a physically and mentally zombie.
In an attempt to stop my transformation into the walking dead, I started meditating—and let me tell you, it worked wonders!
I began to realize just how many people, like me, were running on empty, never taking time for themselves.
I really wanted to help those people but had no clue how.
Then one day, my husband suggested we start this shop together, and something clicked.
Now, I’m on a mission to make sure everyone gets their 'me time'—because trust me, we all need it!"

About the Maker
The orin is made in Toyama Prefecture by Seo Seisakujo, a family-run business and maker of bronze items that was founded in 1935.
Takaoka, the city where the company's workshop is located, has been at the heart of Japan's bronzeworking for more than 400 years and is well-known in Japan for the high quality metal products such as singing bowls made there.
Seo's workshop carries on the traditions and techniques passed down in Takaoka since the Edo Period, and they take care to ensure every detail of each piece they produce is just right.
To give the orin singing bowl it's superior tone, Seo's craftsmen carefully heat the metal to give it just the right hardness, ensuring a wonderfully clear sound.
I fell in love with their orin the moment I first felt its solid weight in my hand and heard it ring, and I hope that you will love it too.
