A reinterpretation of the classic Gifu Chochin lantern, the Andon Triangle pairs the charm of Japanese craftsmanship with a refined, modern design.

The lamp’s soft light gently enhances any space, offering a tranquil ambiance.

Why We Love It

Although sturdy in appearance, the lantern is lightweight and easy to move, making it versatile for various settings: a soft table light, a subtle hallway lamp, or even ambient lighting in an entryway.

Each lantern is handmade in Japan by paper lantern maker Asano Shoten, and includes a built-in light powered by 2 AA batteries, meaning you can use it regardless of your country.

The light will shine for about 25 hours before needing a battery change.

About the Design

The Andon Triangle blends the Japanese aesthetic of a traditional “chochin” paper lantern with a modern design. While most framed paper lanterns (called “andon” in Japanese) have a rectangular shape, this design uniquely incorporates the triangle—a shape that consistently inspired its designer Cho Daisaku (1921-2014).

The fusion of Japanese and Western influences allows the Andon Triangle to harmonize seamlessly within any interior, casting a soft, calming glow through premium Mino washi paper.

Gifu Chochin and their History

The origin of Japanese lanterns dates back approximately 900 years, with the Gifu area beginning production around the mid-Edo period.

Gifu lanterns are celebrated Japanese traditional crafts made from delicate, high-quality Mino washi paper and bamboo sourced from the natural abundance of Gifu. The lanterns often feature intricate, graceful artwork inspired by autumn grasses and scenic landscapes, a testament to the beauty and precision of Japanese craftsmanship.

About the Maker: Asano Shoten

Founded in 1917, Asano Shoten has crafted Gifu lanterns in Gifu’s historic castle town, sourcing nearly all materials locally and adhering to traditional Edo-era techniques. Today, Asano Shoten is a brand that preserves the legacy of the Gifu lantern while also collaborating with designers to create contemporary lighting that honors Japan’s enduring craftsmanship.
