We made this brass "shokudai" candle holder specifically for our mindfulness candles, which burn for 10, 20, and 30 minutes.
The brass is shaped by hand by a craftsman in Niigata prefecture, and the candle stand sits atop a stone plate made of Oya-Ishii, a volcanic rock that has been used in Japan since ancient times for buildings and other materials.
The dish is curved so that any wax that melts down will collect at the bottom of the dish and be burned completely as the candle burns out.
The brass also reflects the candlelight, making it dance beautifully around the room.
Each piece is made by hand, and no two are exactly alike.
The brass will age and discolor with time and use, giving it a wabi-sabi aspect that we appreciate.
The needle can be unscrewed, and the two dishes separated for thorough cleaning if desired.
I love these candles , and the holder . They arrive so beautifully packaged., and you can feel all the love and care that went into all stages of the design. use them for direct contemplation mediation, and am thrilled with them .
These candles are so lovely, with a bright big flame and clean burn. Such care went into making them.
The candle holder is a lovely elegant shape, perfectly proportioned with the candles. This lovely focus slips perfectly into my meditation practice. Thank you!
The brass stand was beautiful and works well, the candles burn for the promised amount of time, and the handwritten note and included origami made me smile! I highly recommend this set and this lovely company!
This is my third or fourth different item from Shi-Zen. I keep coming back because of the quality of craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and their spirit of supporting tradition in today’s convenience obsessed world. Now, to the actual review! The brass holder and volcanic rock base are stunning. Their circular nature and complimentary beauty are a meditation in itself. As for the candles, I could not believe how clean burning they are. The flame grows steadily allowing a building focus. As you approach the end of the burn, you are reminded of impermanence as the flame slowly recedes and the wick burns out. Very little (if any) wax is left at the end and the wick husk is easily removed. I’ve burned multiple candles without needing to clean anything. I purchased the 10, 20, and 30 minute lengths. Love this. Well done, Shi-Zen!
